We had new flooring installed in our kitchen and entryway. The man who was going to do the installation came over to measure. He was a nice guy. His name was Paul.
The day the flooring was to be installed a different man showed up at my doorstep. This man was NOT the man who came over the 1st day.
This new man, at my door, said this to me, “blah blah blah FLOOR blah blah blah” (SMILE!)
And I let him in because he had tools and I could understand the word “floor.”
Plus he was smiling so that had to mean something good, right?
I speak smile.
I do not speak Spanish.
Except I do know from past experience what “loco” means and yes, people, I have heard it in reference to moi.
I also parle Francais.
Anylanguagebarrier… he got to working and since Emily was packing boxes in her room and Sarah was in her room, I was going back and forth and back and forth from their rooms to the kitchen every 5 minutes.
Each and every time I passed the man, he stood up and smiled at me.
And that is nice.
Except it was more of a gaze.
It was odd and uncomfortable.
I don’t like feeling uncomfortable in my own home.
And then he saw me making more boxes and he talked to me, but I couldn’t really understand him so I just smiled and kind of nodded because I am a pro at smiling and nodding when I have no clue what is being said, so I made some chit-chat about moving and packing and I was really doing my best to try to understand him, really I was.
But he wouldn’t stop talking and smiling and gazing at me, his new BFF.
So what does one do in this situation?
You text your husband ASAP! And it goes somethin’ like this:
Me: Hey! There is a man here doing the floor. He is NOT Paul. Where is Paul? Have you heard from him? Is he coming? This man does not speak English and I think he is falling in love with me! Call Paul!
Tyler: This is not a text that I want to get. Should I come home?
Me: No! He just keeps smiling at me. I am fine!! Find out if Paul is coming!
Paul eventually came. The other guy gazed at Paul the same way he gazed and smiled at me so I guess that is just his thing. He is just a nice and happy guy.
What would you have done? How do you like having workmen in your house? Are you Stranger-Danger like me?
